The Climate Crisis Post 13
By Anders C. Sørby
- 4 minutes read - 648 wordsThe big news now is that the climate lawsuit against the state won and new oil fields are illegal under the constitution. There will also be a temporary injunction and production on these fields must stop. What is going to happen now? The state is not in the habit of following such judgments, such as with Fosen, but is the state really valid if they can break the law? Is society dissolved? It will be exciting to see.
Why is there more and more censorship of climate research and activism? Can we no longer bear to hear the truth and statements when the content is so serious? This anti-democratic development where clear warnings from experienced researchers from around the world become ignored by even after they have demonstrated civil disobedience, such as Peter Kalmus, is disturbing.
The research is very clear that the climate crisis and the inadequate efforts will be catastrophic. We have already found more fossil energy than we can bear to burn within the 2-degree target. We are heading for around 2.7 degrees of warming or more as there are different forecasts for emission cuts and how much warming increased CO2 will cause.
Leading scientists, such as James Hansen, warn that the most common climate models underestimate the risk and the consequences of warming. It is not wise to bet on them being wrong.

Hannah Ritchie’s new book “Not the end of the world” criticizes those who believe it is too late to do something about the climate crisis and that this is to the advantage of the climate deniers. She also comes up with solutions to the problems. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/02/hannah-ritchie-not-the-end-of-the-world-interview

Extreme weather
The climate crisis has accelerated the extreme weather in 2023, WWA reports, and 2024 will break even more records. https://www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-change-fuelled-extreme-weather-in-2023-expect-more-records-in-2024/
Economy
Is it possible to achieve sustainability with the current growth paradigm? No, we must embrace the original definition of growth: springing up and developing into maturity. That is how nature works. There are always some tolerance limits that you have to deal with. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-02509-5

Deep sea mining approved in the Storting receives international attention. It goes against all environmental advice and will probably have disastrous consequences. In any case, the level of knowledge is low and it should be independent researchers who determine the sustainability of this and not the mining companies, as the decision suggests. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/09/norway-set-to-approve-deep-sea-mining-despite-environmental-concerns
Energy
Oil
This is how much it costs to quickly dismantle the oil industry, writes the Financial Editor in Dagens Næringsliv. At worst, employment may fall slightly more than in 2013 to 2017. https://www.dn.no/kommentar/olje-og-gass/energi/klima/sa-mye-koster-det-a-raskt-bygge-ned-oljenaringen/2-1-1579670
